(RE)BRANDING the visual identity of museum de Bastei
The brief was simple: create a visual identity for a museum of my own choice. I chose Museum de Bastei, from Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The museum already some sort of visual identity, but it was not working. And so the job began!
I personally started creating a logo before thinking of a graphic universe. The shape of the logo follows that of the museum itself. I wanted to highlight the name so I put it inside the icon. The typography I used is a modern humanist typeface: Candara, which works for the identity of the museum. It provides a blend of modern and formal tones with something more approachable related to the sans serif typeface.
The logo was the foundation for the graphic system. I took the shape of the icon and played around with it, creating a versatile, but still memorable visual universe. The main colours are white, black and red (the latter two are also the official colours of Nijmegen, so the connection between the city and the museum is strengthened). To this basic palette, I added extra colours that would more possibilities for other sub-departments of the museum to utilise.
The last few add ons are the iconography for the website, but for the actual museum as well (such as indicators, toilet signs etc). And of course, to bring everything together I designed some poster prototypes for different uses and various formats. The purpose here was to create different creatives for the museum whilst maintaining its visual identity cohesive.
